History of Sleep HealthCenters
Sleep HealthCenters (SHC) was founded in 1997 by Stanley Goldstein, David Barone and Professor Peretz Lavie. Headquartered in Brighton, MA, SHC is staffed by experts in the field of sleep medicine and owns and operates sleep medicine centers throughout eastern Massachusetts. Mr. Barone had initially learned about the field of sleep medicine through a talk given by Professor Lavie, a recognized expert in the field, who was the Dean of the medical school at the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, in Haifa, Israel and founder of Sleep Disorders Centers, a sleep medicine company in Israel. David learned that in Israel they were using a service delivery model somewhat different from most U.S. providers, which simply diagnosed sleep apnea and then referred patients to other providers for treatment. This often resulted in lack of follow up, uncoordinated care and often times poor outcomes. After some additional research, we developed a model to collaborate with health care providers in the community to develop a comprehensive Sleep Medicine Center designed to treat all sleep disorders and provide a full range of treatment options and follow up care in one location.
Through initial discussions with Dr. David White, Director of the Sleep Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, to create an improved service delivery system, we collaborated with the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Brigham Medical Group to develop SHC's first comprehensive program. With Dr. White as Corporate Medical Director, we created the Sleep HealthCenter Affiliated with Brigham and Women’s Hospital located in Brighton, MA. This state-of-the-art center offers a full range of diagnostic and treatment services for patients with sleep disorders. As a result of its success, the company has expanded throughout Massachusetts and New York City. Each Center is designed and managed to achieve improved outcomes and enhanced patient satisfaction. SHC utilizes the most current technologies to diagnose and treat patients with a wide variety of sleep disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Insomnia, Narcolepsy and Restless Legs Syndrome. SHC has become the largest provider of sleep diagnosis and treatment in the region and is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
